Northumberland Film Sundays
Mission Statement
We are a group of film lovers dedicated to offering access to a diverse range of films not otherwise available at local cinemas.
We choose our films from the current TIFF FILM CIRCUIT Release Schedule which is comprised of a selected list of films with Canadian distributors and a limited theatrical release pattern.
As part of the Northumberland arts community, NFS aims to present films of high quality which serve to entertain, inform and offer perspectives from the world of contemporary Canadian and International cinema, with a focus on stories and story-telling.
We are a not-for-profit group. We will periodically make contributions to Northumberland County charities when a cash surplus permits.
Films are screened at Rainbow Cinemas at Northumberland Mall in Cobourg on Sunday afternoons.
Rainbow showing “Movie Man”
This movie may be of interest to Film Sundays’ Patrons.
Special screening of the "The Movie Man" at Rainbow Cinemas on Sunday April 28th at 3:00pm
The Movie Man is the first feature length documentary from director Matt Finlin. This film centres around Keith Stata, now 75 years old, who has been running a theatre in the small town of Kinmount, Ontario for the past 43 years. Growing up a passionate film enthusiast, Stata once imagined himself becoming a filmmaker, but circumstance kept him in Kinmount. Not one to give up on his passions, he focused his energy into creating a theatre of his own: the Highlands Cinema. Beginning with a one-room cinema with a 12-foot screen, he expanded over the years to a five-screen theatre filled with charm. A lover of old projectors, Stata lines the walls of Highland Cinemas with his collection, creating an atmosphere like no other.
But The Movie Man is not just the portrait of one man's life, but rather of how a persistent and earnest desire to share one's passions can impact and enliven a community. The memories and love shared through the generations for this man and this place can be felt in every moment. An appeal to the importance of local heroes and local businesses, The Movie Man encourages us to treasure our local theatres.
